What is Girls Lead on the Go?
Girls Lead on the Go (GLG) is a community-based leadership experience for 7th-9th grade girls that connects them to community service organizations. The organizations teach and inspire leadership, community action and civic engagement with girls in their local communities. It is youth leadership that is community-driven and community-based.
How did GLG develop?
The Girls Lead on the Go program came out of Girls Lead, a 6-week summer program for girls in 10th-12th grade that included a week-long leadership camp held on a Minnesota university campus, life-coaching, and working with a community partner to organize a community project. The Girls Lead model has been successful because it emphasizes personal development as the first step to leadership, and stresses the importance of a community connection in utilizing learned leadership skills.
Over the past eight years Girls Lead has developed leadership skills in over ninety girls from eleven different communities in northwestern Minnesota. In an effort to expand Girls Lead to include more girls and more communities, Peacemaker Resources has established Girls Lead on the Go (GLG). This new program is in response to requests from across northern Minnesota to make Girls Lead accessible to more communities and more girls.
It’s easy to be inspired – it’s another thing to put new skills into practice. GLG will help girls in their early teens become aware of their strengths and values. In knowing their unique strengths, girls will be motivated to set and work toward achieving personal goals. In the long term, the participants will be better able to recognize where they can each make a difference in their communities.
How does GLG work?
Girls Lead on the Go is sponsored by a local community service organization such as Women of Today, Jaycees or Rotary. Peacemaker Resources provides a curriculum and training to at least two volunteers from each community organization that will enable them to facilitate a day-camp leadership experience for 7th-9th grade girls. The girls will experience leadership through building upon their strengths, and participating in team-building and goal setting activities. The host service organization will help girls identify community projects to be developed at a later date.
When and Where is GLG?
Peacemaker Resources is piloting the Girls Lead on the Go program in the summer of 2016 in northwestern Minnesota communities where Girls Lead has been a success, with plans to expand to more communities in 2017.
