Super Heroes & Leadership!?

Imagine walking into a room with 15 adults who are clucking like chickens, roaring like dinosaurs or running around being superheroes. You just might think you had walked into the wrong room! However, that was the scene at a recent training for area women who will be leading the new Girls Lead On the Go! program.  The training was held in May to introduce volunteer facilitators to the curriculum they will be leading with the girls in their own communities.

Five northwestern Minnesota communities have been selected to pilot Girls Lead On the Go! The new program is an offshoot of Girls Lead which is a youth leadership program of Peacemaker Resources. The goal of both Girls Lead and Girls Lead On the Go!  is to empower and equip young women to have a positive relationship with self, others and community.

Girls Lead On the Go! is a daylong community-based leadership experience for girls entering 7th-9th grades. This year’s theme is “Discover Your Super Hero”.  Girls will identify and develop their own personal super powers through games and activities. In addition, they will develop communication skills to express what they believe and how they can make change in their communities. The girls participating in On the Go! will connect with community leaders and past Girls Lead participants to build leadership awareness and skills from the inside out.

Girls Lead On the Go! is funded through a partnership with a local community service organization, Northwest Minnesota Women’s Fund, Northwest Minnesota Foundation and Women’s Foundation of Minnesota.   Five pilot communities will be holding the On the GO! events throughout the summer and fall:

Roseau event is sponsored by the Roseau Women of Today and will be held Saturday, June 18 from 10 am-8:30 pm at the Roseau City Park.

Warroad event is sponsored by the Warroad Women of Today and will be held Wednesday,  June 22 from 11am-9pm at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Baudette event is sponsored by the Lake of the Woods Women of Toady and will be held Saturday, July 16 from 10am-6pm at Willie Walleye park.

Events sponsored by Greenbush and Middle River Women of Today chapters will be held at a later date.

All events are $10 per participant which includes a t-shirt, supper and manual. For more information about registering for a Girls Lead On the Go! event contact Kathy Magnusson at (218) 242-5318 or kathy@peacemakerresources.org
